Menorca - how to come to and moving on the island

During the summermonths, it easy to fly to Menorca from european airports to Mahon. In wintertime, many flights are cancelled, but if you like to, you can go to Palma and take a ferry or national flight to Menorca.

In contrast to Son San Juan, the mallorquin airport, the airport of Menorca is small and with short ways. Rent-a-car and bankautomats are available.
There are some ferries from Mallorca: Ciutadella - Puerto de Alcudia (normal ferry, you can take a car with you)
Ciutadella - Cala Ratjada (catamaranferry, only persons, takes 75 min.)
These two ferries run twice a day, company is Flebasa 971.480012

Once a week (sunday), there is a big ferry from Palma to Mahon, and there are aswell ferries to mainland Spain (Valencia), company is Trasmediterranea 971.366050.

The skipper with his yacht only has to take care for the often changing weather.
To come from France, the spanish Costa Brava or Sardinia, you will need a good weatherforcast, as you will have to sail overnight. A trip to the Balearics without nightturn is possible by the route Denia-Ibiza- Mallorca-Menorca.

On the island, moving is a bit complicated. Of course, there are rent a cars, but they are much more expensive than on Mallorca, where you pay approx. 10 pound per day. On Menorca, especially in Mahon, you pay approx.30 pound or more, especially in highseason.
You can rent bycicles and bikes, there are busses running between the tourist villages, mainly in summer. The roads are not all in good condition, sometimes dangerous for cyclists or bikers.

Busses all over the year run between Mahon and Ciutadella and stop in Alaior, Es Mercadal, Ferreries, Es Castell, Sant Lluis, Fornells and Es Migjorn.

    Menorca - eating out

Gin, cheese and mayonnaise - this is, what you can´t miss on Menorca.

The Gin destillery in Mahon, just nearby the waterfront is called Xoriguer and very famous. Have a look, how they produce it and taste the result.
"Queso Maó" is a famous cheese and you can buy it in different ages:
Queso de Mercadal is young, soft and smooth tasting, "curado" is older and stronger tasting, test both!

The wellknown mayonnaise originally comes from Mahon, created under the name Maonesa by the cook of Richelieu, who was french commander of Menorca in 1756.

Another speciality, which you shouldn´t miss, although it is an expensive one, is "Caldereta de Langosto" a dish made of crayfish, best to eat in Fornells.

"Oliaigo" is a simple dish made of roasted onions, garlic, red pepper, smashed tomatoes, sometimes added by figues.
Very good aswell is "arroz de la terra" (a bit like couscous) or oven-baked eggplants.

Another real good speciality are the menorcin chicken, feed with maiz, making their meat a bit yellow. They run free and their taste is excellent.
"Sweeties" will find their paradise in Mercadal. Visit Ca´s Sucrer and try "amargos" or "carquinols".... no comment!!!
