General Map NorthWestCorner Menorca
The northwestcorner of Menorca is THE bulwark against the Mistral/Tramonatana, heavy northerlies, mainly coming from the Rhone-valley. The most obvious sign is grey rock very rare vegetation.
Nearly no little plant, that could survive at the NW-cape. This aswell means a warning of the bays at this side. They should only be used in calm, steady summerweather and with a good weatherforcast. As soon, as norths are advised you should leave as soon as you can, because quick, sometimes much too quick a heavy sea builds up and there may be no escape.
The only harbour in this region is
Ciutadella
, a wonderful old city, but for our point of view as a harbour, not the best choice. There is a lot of swell of the ferries, commercial vessels, from the sea itself, it is very narrow, boats have to moor side by side and, after all, a phenomen of changing waterlevels.
This meteorological phenomen is called "resarca" or "rissagues". Some special meteorological circumstanzas have to come together, the result is an extreme fast lost of water, like a tide, water sinks about 1.5m, mainly in the summermonths and at night. A normal sailor cannot see, when there is a situation, causing resarca, so take care, what the fishers do, when you are in Ciu.
